Currently, there is a major push to form community-based conservancies (CBC) in Africa. CBCs are entities formed on land owned and occupied by local communities that agree to set aside a portion of their acreage for conservation purposes. Proponents tout that CBCs offer victories for biodiversity conservation and economic gains from tourism. Yet, there is relatively little empirical evidence regarding the impacts of CBCs.
In this talk, Lesorogol will present study findings regarding local understandings of the benefits, costs, and impacts on pastoral livelihoods of CBCs in Samburu County, Kenya.
This program is presented in partnership with the International Center for Child Health and Development and Smart Africa.
