Professor Wiens has been conducting research in Antarctica that has implications for the future of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and global sea level rise. His GPS uplift measurements and seismic structure indicate that parts of West Antarctica are underlain by very low viscosity mantle, changing estimates of recent and possible future ice mass loss and perhaps even the likelihood of climate-induced ice sheet collapse.
